Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai

A place of Dream, yes it is Mumbai. And it is the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai ( M C G M ), which leads the role for the betterment of life for all it’s citizens and as well as for Urban Governance in Greater Mumbai. Established in 1882, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is the largest local Government in the Asian continent. It has been working hard to develop the fields of education, public health, art and culture, creation of urban amenities, heritage conservation etc., with the help of NGO’s, organization of citizen, and non-political groups.

BEST, BYL Nair Hospital, KEM Hospital, are the agencies of MCGM. Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai with all of its agencies works to achieve efficiency and excellence in services for the Mumbai citizens.

For more transparency and for the benefit of the citizens, MCGM has embraced a portal named E-Governance. On this portal, citizens can file their complaints and can see the status of their complaints. They can apply for birth and death certificates, provided the birth registration data of the applicant is available with MCGM and the data is post 1995. In addition a citizen can apply for Shop & Establishment registration, apply for Trade licence under section 394, 313,328A, apply for Health license under section 394,412 and MPFA license, and apply for Factory Permit etc.

Thane Municipal Corporation

Since the 9th century A.D., the existence of Thane appears in the history. At that time it was known as Shreesthanak, capital of the Shilahar dynasty. Thane Municipal Corporation, since its inception, has undertaken many development projects in Thane and its surrounding areas. Owing to its infrastructural development, the Government of India conferred the prestigious “Clean City Award” to Thane in the year 2000. According to the 1990 census, the population of Thane was 7, 90,000. But due to the expansion of Thane city, the population reached to about 14, 00,000 in the year 2003.

The Thane Municipal Corporation has divided the full zone of Thane into nine wards as mentioned below.

  • Kopri Ward
  • Naupada Ward
  • Wagle Estate Ward
  • Rayladevi Ward
  • Uthalsar Ward
  • Vartaknagar Ward
  • Manpada Ward
  • Kalwa Ward
  • Mumbra Ward.

Chronology of Thane in brief:

  • On 16th April, 1853 the first Railway train from Boribunder to Thane started.
  • In the year 1866 the first Newspaper was launched in Thane.
  • In the year 1881, the first census took place in Thane.The population was 14456 according to census at that time.
  • In 1896, the birth anniversary of Maharaj Shivaji was celebrated for the first time in Thane.
