As Mumbai is the state capital, state and federal government employees make up a large percentage of the city's workforce. Mumbai also has a large unskilled and semi-skilled labour population, who primarily earn their livelihood as hawkers, taxi drivers, mechanics and other such blue collar professions. The port and shipping industry too employs many people directly or indirectly.

After India’s independence in 1947, it experienced the majority growth in industry and economy that was intermeshed with the national economy in subsequent period. South Mumbai is known as the nerve centre of Indian economy as country’s major financial institutions are located in this region. The Bombay Stock Exchange, Reserve Bank of India, National Stock Exchange, the Mint, as well as numerous Indian companies such as the Tata Group and Reliance Industries Limited are located in South Mumbai.

Mumbai’s history of trading dates back to early 19th century. It was considered as an appropriate place for textile industry. The city’s entertainment industry is the largest in world. Most of India's television and satellite networks are located in Mumbai. Bollywood – the Indian film industry has a vital role in country’s economic growth.

Some other important industries in the city are: Pharmaceuticals, construction, metals, silks, glassware, printing, plastics and bikes. It has a large petroleum industry. Nearly all of India's petroleum is marketed from Mumbai. The city has a separate position in the economic map of the world due to its rapid industrialization and opportunities for employment.
