Mumbai played a vital role in the political affairs of the country during the British Rule.The city was home to some of country’s renowned politicians like Dadabhai Naoroji, Sir Pherozeshah Mehta, Sir Cowasji Jehangir, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and many others who actively participated in the freedom movement of India. Modern Mumbai has not lost its importance whenever politics is taken in to consideration.Mumbai is now the political nerve centre of Maharashtra.It contributes six seats to the Lok Sabha (India's Lower House of Parliament) and thirty four seats to the Maharashtra State Assembly.The structure of the government is bicameral and it consists of two houses.The Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) is the lower house consisting of directly elected members.The Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council) is the upper house, whose members are indirectly elected through an electoral college.Both the houses are located in the heart of the city.All the major state political parties have their offices in Mumbai.
