Mumbai’s mode of transport is very systematic. It consists of local train, B.E.S.T bus, taxi and autorickshaw services. Local train is the most common mode of transport in the entire city and suburbs. It is the fastest and cheapest mode of communication for the Mumbai commuters. Local trains are available with first and second class compartments along with ladies’ and handicappers’ reserved compartments. The B.E.S.T buses are the most efficient mode of transport in Mumbai. It comes with ladies, senior citizens and handicappers’ special seats. There are two options in taxis: non air conditioned taxi and the taxi with air condition which is known as “cool cab” in Mumbai. The taxis and autorickhaws ply with meters.
Public Transport in Mumbai involves the transport of millions of its citizens by train, road and water. Over 88% of the commuters in Mumbai prefer to use public transport (suburban trains or buses) since it is most convenient, efficient, cheap and punctual means of transportation.
Mumbai's public transport primarily comprises:
- Public Bus Service (BEST):
- This system is run by a government organization Bombay Electric Supply & Transport. It has a fleet of red single and double-decker buses. There are newly introduced air conditioned and low floor buses
- Suburban Electric Trains: Local Railway Lines
- Western Railway running between Churchgate and Virar.
- Central Railway running between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Formerly known as Victoria Terminus [V.T.]) and Karjat and Kasara.
- Harbour Line running between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Formerly known as Victoria Terminus [V.T.]) and Mankhurd. This railway line has now been extended to Navi Mumbai and Panvel. A new line harbour line has extended from Panvel to Karjat
- Public Taxi/Autorickshaw Services:
- Black and yellow metered taxis
- Silver and Green and Yellow and Red Radio Taxis run by Meru and Gold cabs.
- Blue and silver airconditioned metered taxis known as Cool Cabs Black and yellow metered Autorickshaws which are not allowed in the Central area (between Colaba & Mahim in the West and Colaba and Sion in the East) of the city.
- Waterway Services:
- Hovercraft services connect Vashi, in Navi Mumbai to the Gateway of India. On the West, this service links Chowpatty to Juhu.
- Ferry services are available to visit Elephanta Caves and to nearby places such as Alibaug, Rewas and Mandwa.
